Singapore is a truly multi-cultural nation. It has four official languages--- Malay, English, Chinese (Mandarin) and Tamil---with Punjabi, Hindi, Bengali, Tegelu, Malayan and several Chinese dialects spoken in the Indian and Chinese communities. There are four official religions (Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism and Christianity) plus Sikh and Jewish minorities. The language of public administration is English, which also serves as a bridge between different communities, although its role as a bearer of so-called Western values and as a distributor of inequality in the society has been critized lately.
