Excited and arrived in time, our enthusiastic hikers waited for the
bus to arrive at Linnanmaa in the evening. A call to the bus company
revealed eventually that the driver got the day of departure wrong.
Luckily the bus could be organized after one and a half hours.
On the way it turned out that the company had informed the driver
incorrectly about the day when we should be picked up, too.
But after getting that clear the trip could be continued with faithful
minds.

After the bus had had some exciting time on slippery backroads, dropping the
groups, we finally arrived at the terminal point - near Krabbfjällnäset.
There also our group of five, Active II, got the skis on and started the
hike in a cloudy weather with the sun glimmering promisingly behind the clouds
every now and then.
Crossing lake Över-Uman turned out to be quite time-consuming because
of mild wind and soft snow (which turned into puddles every now and then).
The rocky island in the middle of the lake worked out to be a fine lunch
spot.
After the lunch we got company: a nice and long-lasting rain that got
us, struggling in the soft snow, completely wet. Going around Fjällripafjället
(Rock Ptarmigan Fjell) was slow in the soft snow because of many pairs of
too slippery skis. The poor hill wouldn't deserve its Fjell-name, and we
didn't see a glimpse of Rock Ptarmigans (we found a dead Willow Ptarmigan,
though, but it wasn't that much of food for five people).
As everybody was entirely wet and cold, we decided not to continue
skiing and pitch the tent on the ridge. In the tent the mood got clearly
better as we got dry clothes on and something warm to eat. Everybody tries
to avoid going out of the tent and our camp will fall asleep early
with the raindrops falling on the tent.

pilkottaen.
Över-Uman järven ylitys osoittautui kohtalaisen aikaa vieväksi lievän tuulen ja
pehmeiden hankien (jotka välillä muuttuivat vesilätäköiksi) ansiosta. Järven
keskiosan kalliosaari osoittautui hienoksi lounaspaikaksi.
Ulosmenoa itsekukainenkin
yrittää vältellä ja leirimme vaipuukin ajoissa nukkumaan sateen ripotellessa pisaroitaan
teltan kattoon.

Thursday 24.3.2005 and Friday 25.3.2005
Hi, I'm Marco, one of the five people in our scout group. This is my first
experience in a hiking with skiies and this latitudes too. (I came from Italy and I
have been a scout). I can only say thanks to SOOPA and the rest of my group
very warm. Because after the first day my backpack was completely wet with
all the things that was inside and I passed one of the worst night of my life
but wasn't a problem. The other help to me to resolve practical problem like
drying my sleeping bag or my clothes. Because with this temperatures for we
could was impossible think that my staff could come dry again. My most worry
however was to get sick and can't continues the trip.
I saw place that in my mind I couldn't imagine we across an iced lake where
was 10 cm of water and snow together, very hard skiing there. In this places
your eyes get lost the
sense of distance. At the beginning I thought that we took a wrong way because
in the map was longer but wrong was my eyes...
After the loooong lake
(about 6 km) we took a way where was full of little hill in the middle of
a valley where we started to look for a camp: a rock in the middle begun our
house with balcon, toilette, kitchen, bedrooms and just little
domestic animals that Lauri pictured. I don't remember what we eat but the
moon the raised was wonderful after a cloudy day and the other one before
worste. Thanks to SOOPA and the SOOPA's group: Lauri, Juho, Anne, Iva.

Our most devoted wishes became true, cielo a pecorelle - acqua a catinelle
didn't: we woke up with a brisk, cloudless sunshine. Having fed ourselves
and the families of Norway Lemmings and mole children, we took off to
enjoy skiing without our backpacks, just a little packed lunch and drinks
with us. Our goal was to ski on top of Snjåkka (1391,9 m) and before evening return
back to Norway, Snjeltfjelldalen, to our camp spot, which had turned out
to be perfect.
As the crow flies, we estimated the distance to Snjåkka to be about
12 km. The way there would be uphill from the valley, the way back mainly
speedy downhill. The weather really was on our side; not a single cloud,
no wind, just the warmth of the sun and rugged, snowy scenery.
On the way we had three steeper uphills: right in the beginning when
we started to get up from the valley, near Arttjårro and before reaching
Snjåkka. At those points the undersigned took advantage of the hard snow and
showed some nordic walking to the Scandinavian mountains. As usual, the
top of Snjåkka seemed the be there like a mirage many times before the
last, highest rock was conquered. The undersigned had to give up before
the top because the plastic skis couldn't provide enought grip and
the afternoon sun had softened the snow so that it couldn't be walked on.
The top was reached by four vigorous conquerors with wooden, good-grip skis
from three different countries: Finland, Czech Rebublic and Italy.
On the top they had reportedly done not only sunbathing but some ski
jumping as well. The way back was mostly downhill, sometimes also pretty
challenging, especially after the sun started to go down and the
snow started to get harder. The day was gorgeous, our cheeks were
glowing thanks to the sun and we were thirsty. Didn't have any running
water on our way, that is. After the sunset our camp was lit by full moon
and millions of starts.
The original text in Finnish:
Hartaimmat toiveemme kävivät toteen, ciello a pecorelle, acqua acatinelle
mukanamme. Määränpäänä oli valloittaa Ruotsin puolella oleva Snjåkka (1391,9 m)
ja palata illaksi takaisin Norjan puolelle Snjeltfjelldaleniin, suorastaan täydelliseksi
osoittautuneeseen leiripaikkaamme.
Matkaa arvioimme Snjåkkalle olevan linnuntietä
noin 12 km, menomatka nousua matalalta laaksosta, tullessa pääasiassa vauhdikasta laskua.
Sää todella suosi aurinkoa kaipaavia retkeilijöitä; ei pilven hattaraakaan, ei viimaa,
vaan auringon lämpöä ja jylhät, lumiset maiset.
Matkan varrella oli kolmeen otteeseen
jyrkempää nousua, heti laaksosta noustessa, Arttjårron rinteessä ja nousu
Snjåkkalle. Näillä kohdin ainakin allekirjoittanut käytti hyväkseen kantohankea
ja näytti Skandeille mallia suomalaisesta sauvakävelystä. Kuten tavallista,
Snjåkkan huippu näkyi kangastuksen lailla useamman kerran ennenkuin se viimeinen,
korkein kivenlohkare saavutettiin. Allekirjoittanut joutui jättämään leikin
kesken ennen huippua, sillä muovipohjaisista suksista loppui pito ja iltapäivän
aurinko oli pehmentänyt hangen kävelykelvottomaksi.
Huipun saavutti neljä urheaa
valloittajaa pitävin puusuksin kolmesta eri maasta: Suomesta, Tsekin tasavallasta
Auringon laskettua
leiriämme valaisi täysikuu ja miljoonat tähdet.

In the morning we packed our tents near Spjelthaugen, taking it easy as usually,
and skied down to the valley on a hard, icy slope. In a partly cloudly weather
we skied in the valley towards south. After some time Spjeltfjelldalen was over
and we found an idyllic lunch spot on the river bed.
After the lunch we checked the waterfall and started heading for the coast
of Storelva. Little problems speeded up our search for a camp spot and so we built
our camp beside a suspension bridge, beside the river. After having had some
problems first, we managed to make tasty pancakes, and being full we started
sleeping.

Aamulla pakkailtiin Spjelthaugenin tienoille kasatut teltat pakettiin totutun rauhalliseen
tahtiin ja laskettiin alas laaksoon kovaksi jäätynyttä rinnettä pitkin. Puolipilvisessä
säässä hiihdeltiin laaksoa pitkin etelää kohti. Spjeltfjelldalen loppui aikanaan, ja löysimme
jokiuomasta oikein idyllisen lounaspaikan.
kohti. Pienet ongelmat jouduttivat leiripaikan etsimistä, ja niinpä rakensimme leirimme
joelta löytyneen riippusillan viereen. Illalla onistuttiin alkuvaikeuksista huolimatta
paistamaan maittavia lettuja, ja kylläisinä pötkähdettiin nukkumaan.

Aamulla nousemme hankalasti. Me syömme hiutalepuuro ja leipä metukan kanssa.
Marco on gruppenführer tänään. Hän on demokraattinen: "You can go anywhere you want!".
Lähdemme ja seuramme Marcoa. Vähän varovasti. Haluamme tänään tulla perille loppuun.
Menemme hitaasti. Meillä on tarpeeksi aikaa. Illalla leiriydymme kylän lähellä. Me puhumme
kavereiden kanssa. Marco laitaa puuroa sukladen kanssa. Sitten menemme nukkumaan.
So, that's all in Finnish - strange language, astonishing words, amazing grammar...
So what more to this trip? I only can add up several impressions, colors of sparkling
ice, soft snowdrifts. It was great and I am very glad for being a member of our
"ceilo apekorelle...." group - Give thanks to Lauri, our always smiling group leader
for every crazy idea he realized (especially eggs for Easter hare), to Juho for
every word in English and patience in explaining and teaching Finnish, to Anne,
my dear tentmate, for being "a woman in the wilderness" and a real friend in worst.
And Marco, you are the bravest Italiano I have ever met! Thanks for every "don't
worry", with you I feel really like "at om"! :-)
