Technical Communication

During the last year I have participated in a secondary study programme on Technical Communication, a field which is not necessarily the most easily definable. The program itself concentrated mainly on the subjects of content creation, technical documentation and project work. In addition to lectures, group exercises and individual documentation tasks the course included a joint project in which we created an Annual Activity Calendar tool for the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Oulu. My personal contribution to the project included the creation of a field-specific Finnish-English glossary, writing guidelines for the written content and updating instructions for the end-user.

Despite of my rather limited experience in the field of technical communication I found it to be an area in which I have some talent. The ability to come to terms with unexpected challenges and an open disposition towards dialogue are traits which I have found useful regardless of the task at hand. I am the first to admit that I may sometimes come across as someone who tends to complain a lot about assignments which I find either laborious or futile. While this may be true it is also only the first step in the way I approach challenges. I often need to get mad a task in order to complete it, and the introspection which is inevitable in such a situation is a key factor in coming up with a solution. .
